In the quiet moments of despair, when the weight of existence feels too much, a voice from within sometimes speaks, saying, “Please don’t do it.” This voice is small yet profoundly powerful, resonating with a simple, earnest hope. It is the inner child, the younger version of ourselves, asking the older, more burdened self to hold on—to remember a time when life was less complicated, more magical, and full of wonder. This voice is a reminder of who we once were, and what we have yet to become.

The inner child’s plea is not just a request for survival but a call to reconnect with parts of ourselves that were once full of dreams, curiosity, and playfulness. This younger self remembers a time when joy came easily, unburdened by adult fears and sorrows. Life, in those earlier years, held an innocence and simplicity that adulthood often clouds with its demands and complexities. The inner child is not naive to the struggles we face now; rather, they represent a part of us that believes in possibilities, in healing, and in finding beauty, even in dark moments.

When the inner child says, “Please don’t do it,” they are asking us to consider the future they once imagined—a life where pain could be overcome, and where love, laughter, and belonging are possible. They ask us to hold onto hope, even if it’s just a tiny spark. This request is a reminder of resilience, of the countless times we’ve persevered through difficult circumstances. It’s a reminder that while our pain may be overwhelming, it doesn’t define our entire story.

In listening to this voice, we find a powerful connection to ourselves. We begin to see that self-compassion is possible, that our worth goes beyond our achievements or struggles. Our inner child does not judge; they simply ask us to see ourselves through their eyes: as someone deserving of kindness, understanding, and another chance.

This painting, titled Please Don’t Do It, was created to capture the bridge between who we were and who we can still become. It’s an inner plea that gives us a reason to stay, to seek support, and to honor the strength that has carried us this far. By honoring that plea, we honor a life that holds meaning, purpose, and love—even when these can be hard to see. So, if you’re considering ending it all, please don’t do it.
